A Collagen Conundrum

Scar tissue aka “fibrous tissue”, forms in the body as a natural part of the healing process after surgery or injury. As the tissue heals, collagen fibers in the area align in a haphazard manner, creating a lump or thickened area. This can cause pain, limited range of motion, and aesthetic concerns.

Scar massages can help to soften and flatten the scar tissue, improve range of motion, and reduce pain.

To do a scar massage:

  • Start by warming up the area with a warm compress or by taking a warm shower.
  • Use a lotion or oil to lubricate the scar tissue.
  • Gently massage the area in a circular motion,
  • starting at the edges of the scar and working your way towards the center.
  • Apply firm but gentle pressure, and avoid massaging over bony areas or joints
  • Repeat the massage several times a day,

Remember

It's important to keep in mind that scar massage should only be done after the incision has healed and your doctor or physical therapist has cleared you for massage therapy.
